Model management is often confused with modeling agencies although both sometimes function similarly. In fact, quite a few agencies act as management for their models. Model management controls the activities, business dealings and other aspects of a model’s career. Management can be a single individual or an organization; they make sure daily business affairs are in order and running smoothly. Managers also help models in making wise decisions about future career plans and advise them on how their personal life may affect them professionally.
Agencies typically already have established connections while managers normally work on the model’s behalf to establish new ones. For instance, an agency may book a model for runway shows and ad campaigns while a manager may book interviews for the model to discuss said modeling experiences. Managers even assist models in choosing an agency or finding a new one. They are absorbed with the career life of the model – coordinating PR as well as keeping a close eye on financial and legal aspects to increase the model’s chances for success. When it comes to the model’s craft, the manager is responsible for maintaining balance, focus and productivity; their job is never done. Basically, he or she is accountable for the failure or success of the model’s career.
Again, model managers and agencies can function as one in the same. Some models do have an agency separate from their management. As a beginning model, you may not have the budget to afford a manager but it will be wise to have one as you progress in your career. An agency has a multitude of models to look after but your personal manager will be solely focused on you.
